I was just sitting here wondering over the history of the game after researching a ton of stuff in the Grand History of the Realms and the Faerun Atlas. I first played D&D paperback in 1987, in 1989 I obtained the Pool of Radiance computer game on my commodore 64, and in 1991 I obtained my own copy of the AD&D starter boxed set. In 1993 I obtained a copy of the 2.5 Players Handbook and the DMG, and in 1995 I got a copy of the Player's Options Book and several Forgotten Realms modules. I also had a Spelljammer module that linked in with Toril. I have all of the 3.5 Forgotten Realms books now and have played it extensively end to end. So when did you first encounter the FR and DnD?

1998. I loved reading fantasy novels as a child and there are a lot of them in this setting. I started playing DnD 4 years later primarily due to FR.

I'm a latecomer to D&D - didn't start playing until 2008, when I was starting law school. I was introduced to FR through an online game, then further by purchasing the 3.0 and 3.5e setting books, then further by Neverwinter Nights 2. I think it was NWN2 that cemented in me my love of the Realms, though I still haven't read any of the FR novels.

I've been what I like to consider as being a veteran in D&D, it was roughly 8-9 years ago when I was making the transition between grades. My best friend who was playing D&D since he was a little kid[His father has been playing D&D for roughly 30 years already since he was in high school] and he finally got me to come to a game session. Ever since then i've been hooked, getting books both physically and online, and going to games every week.

Hilariously, this is actually my first experience playing in the Forgotten Realms, as my stepdad runs most of our campaigns, and he has a huge homebrew world that he runs things in. I've been playing for about 9 years now, but I haven't been active for most of that (due to being like, a teenager through most of that). I started playing a couple games with my parents, who've been playing since they were kids, and eventually transitioned to online gaming when they ended up not really having the time to run multiple games. Anyways, I did once Co-DM a game set in Faerun (it was one of the Rappan Athuk games, on RPoL), though it fell apart after a while.
Oh wait, Neverwinter Nights is a thing! I beat both expansions of the first one, and haven't beat the second one (mostly due to technical problems), though I have been working on trying to do some modding for it. Currently attempting to make a Gestalt mod. It... isn't going anywhere, really. @_@ But yeah, so I suppose I have that.

Yeah, NWN is a FR game. Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter are both up on the north of the Swordcoast near Waterdeep.
Pool of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds computer games were both in the Dalelands, based around Phlan in the first game, and the Zhentarim and Yulash and the Red Wizards of Thay in the second.

Well, I have this great story about my first FR campaign, and the long, winding road my character took that ended with a kingdom in Icewind Dale and a silver dragon for a bride.
But unfortunately my first experience with the Forgotten Realms was through "Baldur's Gate", which I played on my uncle's now ancient Gateway way back in the spring of '99.
After that, I read through pretty much every FR novel the library had a copy of (it took a couple weeks) and painstakingly tried writing my own novelization of the game. Which, by the way, I'm convinced is still better than Philip Athans' version, and me all of ten years old at the time. Then I somehow convinced my uncle to let me in on a campaign and the rest is - as they say - history.

My first experience was that pool of radiance game for the computer, though I never beat it, and I never even knew it was "forgotten realms". Was a long gap since then, but I basically just dived into it at giantitp some years ago... gotta admit, trying to find a good pbp game is frustrating...

Yeah, it took me 10 years of playing regularly to beat that game. I can walk through most of it in a day now though! lol

I remember a long time ago my friend turned me on to the D&D Temple of Elemental Evil game, now although that was old I remember it was really, really fun . There was also the D&D Online game where you could play a few of the basic races, and pay for others if anyone remembers what I'm talking about?

That game rings a bell, but not sure what it was exactly. Most of the D&D inspired games were utter flops. Only the old Pool of Radiance/Azure Bonds games did any good in the end.
