Personality: Userkaaf Remose is reserved, never wasting a word and never indulging the foolishness of others, real or perceived. He is paranoid, constantly on the watch for thieves or assassins, his alertness bordering on delusion. His furious temper is on a hair trigger, going off like a fireball at any irritation. He is spiteful, vindictive, and almost cruel at times. Remose is bitter and mistrustful of others, constantly wary of betrayal. His incredible arrogance is possibly his worst feature. He literally believes himself part-divine, the glorious son of Horus-Re, descendant from the sky. He supplants this assertation with the even more bizarre claim that he hears the voice of Horus-Re is his mind, guiding him in all matters. Whether this is a lie, true divine intervention, or simply the product of a mind that broke long ago is sadly unclear. Despite his numerous flaws, Userkaaf is tolerated simply because he is at his heart a good person. His paranoia rarely drives him to truly hurt others, and more often it motivates him to protect them from often imaginary threats. He believes his nature as a godling provides him a responsibility to act as a protector. Though his anger is great, his compassion is greater, and his heart's drive to do good is far stronger than his temper's to do otherwise. Indeed, at times when he believes no one is looking, his hard and wrathful visage softens and his expression becomes one of sadness and bitter regret. As much as he can do, it's never enough, and every failure feels like a dagger piercing his chest. On some dark and buried level of his consciousness, he knows he is only mortal. And that merely serves to make his desire for godhood stronger.
Appearance: Userkaaf Remose is a gnarled, scarred, and intimidating hobgoblin, his skin a dark red color, distinct from the rough brown or orange that marks most of race. His face is pitted and cracked, marked by years of violence and abuse. It appears to have been burned, badly in some parts, as well as roughly cut by dull blades. One eye is missing entirely, the socket gruesomely and clumsily sealed by magical means. The other, bloodshot, peers wrathfully from his skull. His remaining hair hangs down from his head loosely, untamed and matted. His face is most often contorted into an expression of intense anger and irritation, his sharp bottom teeth resembling those of an orc. He appears to have sharpened them himself. In contrast to Remose's physical ugliness, his clothes are ornate and finely tailored. He wears a navy blue hooded cloak, adorned with gold and silver fabrics. Adorning his face and ears are several gleaming rings of solid gold; his best effort to emulate the Mulhorandi god he reveres. Hanging loosely from his belt is a small wooden crossbow. Perched on his shoulder sits a beautiful brown feathered falcon, its golden eyes scanning its surroundings intently. Occasionally, it seems to whisper into its masters ear, as if communicating its findings.
History: To the east lies Mulhorand. Though most of the inhabitants of this often arid country are human, there are a few tribes of humanoids eking out a living in the deep desert paths on the outskirts of civilization, beyond any city. One such tribe, consisting of a few thousand hobgoblins, bugbears, and goblins, was the birthplace of Userkaaf Remose, though he had not yet adopted that name. From the beginning, he was set apart by the fiery color of his skin. At first, it gave him prestige. He was seen as special, powerful, touched by elemental fire.
But it was never enough for the young hobgoblin. He began to distance himself, taking long walks into the desert despite the warnings of his tribemates. One day, by chance, or by fate, he stumbled upon the great ruins of the pyramid tombs in which the ancient Mulhorandi buried their dead kings, long since abandoned. Fascinated and enthralled, perhaps feeling a higher calling, he began to translate the archaic Mulhorandi script, learning the arcane secrets left behind by the ancient kings. He discovered more and more of this magic, slowly training himself to be a wizard. His power could have made him a powerful figure within his tribe, but instead he cut himself off almost entirely. It was then that he took on the name of Userkaaf Remose, an ancient Mulhorandi name meaning "His Soul is Strong, the Son of Re".
Soon he was an outsider, mocked and sometimes feared, but more often simply ignored. Near his twenty-fourth birthday, a brutish bugbear called Yakath came in power as the leader of the tribe. Yakath believed that the way to achieve dominance against the other tribes of the region was to plunder and rain the human settlements to the West. Soon the hobgoblin tribe became a major threat of Mulhorandi stability in the region, and groups of hunters came looking for the source of the raids, but could not find the encampment. Fearing a brutal retaliation, and disapproving of the violent means of acquiring wealth used by his leader, Remose informed the Mulhorandi of the location of the tribe, on the conditions that the civilians would not be harmed, and the tribe would be allowed to integrate with Mulhorandi society.
Neither demand was followed, and the furious soldiers brutally massacred many tribesmen and women as they fled into the dunes. When Yakath discovered who had betrayed them, his wrath was savage. He put out the traitors eye with his own blade, then ordered him tortured and then executed in front of the entire tribe. The morning of his execution, surrounded by a jeering crowd of his former friends and family members, Remose was led to a chopping block where he was made to kneel. Before the killing blow was struck, however, a miracle occured. A falcon flew out of the air from the clear blue sky and into the man's face, blinding him temporarily. Userkaaf Remose fled for the hills, hated by Mulhorandi and goblinoid alike, unable ever to return to the land of his birth. Embittered and outcast, he traveled far, searching for a mage's order that could take him in or show him more unknown magical secrets.
